We are the people of Mary Queen of the Apostles Parish, in Brook Park, Ohio, dedicated to following the example of our Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Scriptures and Traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. We gather together to celebrate, to share, and to be nourished by the Eucharist. We promote religious education, spiritual growth and moral values by being faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ. To show our love for God and one another, we live our lives committed to the dignity and salvation of each person, and we live our faith through compassion and service to those in need.

Brought to you by: Mary Queen of the Apostles, Brook Park Community Church of the Brethren, Redeemer Lutheran and United Methodist Church of Brook Park.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesdays will not be held during the month of September. You are welcome to pray in the church, which is open weekdays, 8:30-4PM (except on holidays), keeping in mind that Jesus is present 24/7 in the Holy Eucharist in the Tabernacle.

STREAMING

LIVE-STREAMING OF MASSES We will stream and upload the 8AM Masses on Monday and Tuesday mornings to enable our homebound to connect with the parish. For the rest of the week, EWTN telecasts a number of daily Masses, and our Cathedral streams its weekday Masses at 12N. On Sundays, besides the Masses on EWTN, Channel 43 (WUAB-TV) broadcasts two Masses: 8AM and 10AM from our Cathedral. We realize this will be an inconvenience to some folks, but we tried to reach a compromise based on our recent survey. Initially, one possibility was to cut the streaming entirely but we will not do that.

From Fr. Michael

Brothers and Sisters,

This Sunday’s Gospel shows a group of Pharisees approaching the Lord to inquire about his ministry. They are curious as to why his followers do not purify their hands before eating, a religious practice with which the Pharisees were apparently quite fixated. It seems likely that they are implying that no one was able properly to purify their hands out in the desert where the multiplication of loaves took place. This means that those involved are now defiled, at least in the eyes of the Pharisees.

Jesus uses the chance to speak directly to what really defiles. We should here examine what defilement means and what causes it. Defilement is not to be able to stand in God’s presence. One who was defiled could not join in communal worship; they were excluded from the community and specifically holy places where God could be most profoundly encountered. Defilement was thus a serious matter.

Through the Christian lens, we build upon this concept to understand the deadly effects of sin. Sin hinders our relationship with God. Enough sin, or a mortal sin, severs that relationship. Thus, just as a defiled person could not join the community in prayer, one who is in a state of mortal sin or whose relationship with God needs sufficient repair, cannot be admitted to Holy Communion. This can be rectified of course through sacramental Reconciliation.

But, in an eternal view, we clearly do not want to allow our sins to defile us forever—to keep us from God’s presence forever. The cause of defilement, as Jesus elucidates, is our own participation in vice. When it comes to our salvation, we should have no fear of what others can do to us, even the Devil, because no one can separate us from God—no one can defile us. It is we who defile ourselves through our own sins. The healing and restoring mercy of God is always available. Keep close to him in prayer, remove occasions of sin from your life, and don’t be a stranger to the Confessional! May we all come together forever in the Kingdom of Heaven!

In amore Christi,

Fr. Michael

POPE SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT In the history of the Church, there are less than five popes esteemed with the title "the Great." One of the lesser known members of this impressive group is Pope St. Gregory the Great. Gregory is known for his prolific writing, his radical humility, his emphasis on missions, and his dedication to almsgiving. Enjoy this discussion between Dr. Tim Gray and Dr. John Sehorn.
