We are the people of Mary Queen of the Apostles Parish, in Brook Park, Ohio, dedicated to following the example of our Lord, Jesus Christ, through the Scriptures and Traditions of the Roman Catholic Church. We gather together to celebrate, to share, and to be nourished by the Eucharist. We promote religious education, spiritual growth and moral values by being faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ. To show our love for God and one another, we live our lives committed to the dignity and salvation of each person, and we live our faith through compassion and service to those in need.

Brothers and Sisters,
Christ is Risen!
Indeed He is Risen!
A blessed Easter to you. May the joy of the Resurrection be yours this morning as we celebrate our Savior’s victory over sin and death, which brings the privilege to join in the divine life that he shares with the Father and the Holy Spirit.
There are three key words in the Easter Sunday Gospel from John (although no part of Scripture is useless). These are dark, ran, and believed. Each is a very intentional choice by John that is loaded with meaning.
The passage begins with Mary Magdalene setting out for the tomb when it is still dark. The use of light and darkness is a major motif for John, and here the darkness indicates what still covers the hearts of believers. They do not know about the Resurrection and, despite all of Jesus’ teaching, they have not even anticipated it. They are “in the dark” spiritually about what is going on and what is about to be realized.
This is where we so often must start. We come to the Lord in ignorance, confusion, and that persistent struggle with sin. But the Lord, who is the light of the world, shines on us to illuminate our minds, our hearts, and our consciences. The more we give ourselves over to him, the more clear the way forward becomes.
The only time that anyone appears to walk in this passage is Mary Magdalene on her first trip to the tomb. Once she discovers that it is empty, she runs to find Peter, who runs with the Beloved Disciple to the tomb. They all respond with immediacy to Jesus; this is reminiscent of Mary, who after the Annunciation, goes in haste to tell Elizabeth.
Responding immediately to Jesus is the disposition that we should have. If he is who he says he is, then nothing can be more important than our relationship with him. We should move with eagerness in the spiritual life, following the examples of Mary Magdalene, Peter, and the Beloved Disciple, who ran in response to Jesus.
Finally, the Gospel speaks of believing. This is what eagerness in Jesus leads to, out of darkness and into belief. But not just belief as a kind of acceptance of what is; this kind of belief speaks of following, it requires a certain kind of response. Right belief gives us the courage to arrange our lives according to God’s ways and to follow him… with eagerness.
May we never linger in darkness, but always run to meet the Lord, and believe!
In amore Christi,
Fr. Michael
